Family Business
ALI-EC is developing a unique approach to support Next Generation family business leaders to prepare to take the mantle of family business leadership. Our approach builds upon our retreat-based coaching model. There is preparatory work prior to the retreat and follow-up coaching after the retreat. We take leaders out of their day-to-day situation and bring them to a relaxing and supportive environment which promotes health & wellness and encourages new thinking.
We bring a small cohort of next generation family business leaders to an isolated but very comfortable location. We look holistically at the challenge of assuming the mantle of family business leadership:
1) Understanding self as emerging family and business leader and
2) Understanding the family system and how change happens within that system.
for Family Business Leaders
You recognize that leadership of a family business is very different from leadership in a corporate business. Leadership in this context requires understanding family members’ needs and perspectives. Having a trusted advisor can help the family leader to navigate the sometimes-difficult waters of family relations. Often the coach-advisor helps facilitate family interactions and enables & difficult conversations to occur in a safe, supportive, and intermediated context.
There is a long tradition in Asian family businesses of a trusted advisor who sits outside the family structure but who provides valued counsel and perspective to the family leader.
and Charter Development
At a stage in family business development, there is a desire to formalize or update family governance through structures, process and a family charter. The family may also have concerns about maintaining control of the family business ownership. We assist clients to develop, design and implement family governance structures and practices. Enshrining family governance in a family charter can help minimize family disputes and friction.
Governance issues often emerge at key stages in a family business’ evolution, such as: generational transition, preparing for public listing, family members wanting to develop new ventures outside the core businesses.
You understand that business families have their own unique challenges and opportunities. Most families seek to ensure the sustainability of family ownership of the business over multiple generations. However, different family members may have different expectations of both their family and the business. This can give rise to questions about how to work together effectively. Different perspectives may also lead to disagreements.
Our business family-focused coaches are skilled in working with couples and indeed extensive multi-generational families to facilitate and advise on key family business issues. They draw upon both their own experience and also lessons learned from their studies of other family businesses.
